Why tones matter
Mandarin has four tones plus a neutral tone, and the same syllable with a different tone is a different word: mā (mother), má (hemp), mǎ (horse), mà (to scold). Getting tones right is the single biggest lever for being understood — and the hardest thing to practice without instant feedback. That's exactly what this test gives you.

- What do tones, initials, and finals mean?
- Every Chinese syllable is an initial (starting consonant) plus a final (vowel ending), spoken with a tone (pitch pattern). For example, hǎo = h + ao + 3rd tone. Scoring each part separately shows you exactly where your pronunciation breaks down.
- What is a good score?
- 85 and above means a native speaker would understand you instantly. 60–84 means you're close — check which syllable turned yellow or red and try again. Below 60 is completely normal for first-timers; tones take a few tries.
- Does my recording get uploaded?
- Scoring happens entirely on your device. Anonymous test recordings are never uploaded or stored.
