Three things decide whether a syllable lands. Each one is scored separately, so you always know what to work on next.
Tones
mā, má, mǎ and mà are four different words. Every syllable's tone is scored on its own, so you see exactly which pitch pattern breaks down.
Initials
The zh/z, ch/c, sh/s contrasts and the puff of air in p, t, k carry meaning — miss one and 站 (zhàn, to stand) turns into 赞 (zàn, to praise).
Finals
